Benzinga - Michael Jordan, widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time, is not just a legend on the court. The six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and current owner of the Charlotte Hornets is making headlines for a philanthropic act that shows his heart is as big as his game.
What Happened: On his 60th birthday, the "Space Jam" star announced a massive donation of $10 million to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America — the largest donation ever made by an individual to the charity in its 43-year history.
With an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion, Jordan's generosity is no surprise to those who know him.
"For the past 34 years, it's been an honor to partner with Make-A-Wish and help bring a smile and happiness to so many kids," Jordan said.
"Witnessing their strength and resilience during such a tough time in their lives has truly been an inspiration. I can't think of a better birthday gift than seeing others join me in supporting Make-A-Wish so that every child can experience the magic of having their wish come true."
As one of the most requested celebrities, he has granted hundreds of wishes over the years. In 2000, Jordan made a young girl's dream come true when he met 11-year-old Katie, who had to put her dreams of becoming a basketball star on hold after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The experience was so impactful that she joined Make-A-Wish as a full-time staff member for five years, the PR from Make-A-Wish said.
"Everyone knows about Michael's legacy on the basketball court, but it's what he has consistently done off the court when no one's watching that makes him a true legend for wish families and the wider Make-A-Wish community," said Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America.
While Jordan's donation and countless wishes granted make him one of Make-A-Wish's most significant benefactors, he is not the only celebrity making an impact.
John Cena, the wrestling star and actor, holds the organization's record for granting the most wishes. Starting in 2002, Cena has granted a total of 650 wishes, earning recognition from the Guinness World Records.
