Investing.com – Japan equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Insurance, Power and Financial Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 lost 3.40%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Obayashi Corp. (T:1802), which rose 3.23% or 35.0 points to trade at 1120.0 at the close. Taiheiyo Cement Corp. (T:5233) added 2.72% or 8.0 points to end at 302.0 and Taisei Corp. (T:1801) was up 2.12% or 16.0 points to 769.0 in late trade.
Biggest losers included NTN Corp. (T:6472), which lost 7.63% or 27.0 points to trade at 327.0 in late trade. MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings (T:8725) declined 7.26% or 225.0 points to end at 2873.0 and Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (T:6976) shed 7.22% or 82.0 points to 1053.0.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1737 to 218 and 46 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 16.28% to 31.00 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Crude oil for June delivery was down 5.08% or 2.12 to $39.59 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in June fell 4.87% or 2.10 to hit $41.00 a barrel, while the June Gold contract fell 0.11% or 1.30 to trade at $1233.30 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was down 0.77% to 107.94, while EUR/JPY fell 0.69% to 121.90.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.02% at 94.70.
