Proactive Investors - Claims for compensation by Facebook (NASDAQ:META) users eligible in its settlement for using data without permission have to be lodged today by 11.59 pm Pacific time.
Facebook, owned by Meta Platforms Inc, agreed to the US$725 million settlement following a class action brought by US users of the site following the Cambridge Analytica scandal
Anyone who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 12, 2022, can claim for a payment even if they no longer have an account.
The amount to be paid depends on the number of claims.
Lawyers who brought the action will get 25% of the settlement and eight named plaintiffs to get up to US$15,000 with the rest divided equally among other claimants.
Experts said even if the payout is small, those affected should claim as it sets a precedent for any future data breaches by social media companies.
