Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Mining, Consumer Discretionary and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.75%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW), which rose 15.24% or 1.53 points to trade at 11.57 at the close. Enerflex Ltd . (TO:EFX) added 9.34% or 1.20 points to end at 14.05 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 6.86% or 13.09 points to 204.01 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Newalta Corporation (TO:NAL), which lost 25.88% or 1.92 points to trade at 5.50 in late trade. Paramount Resources Ltd . (TO:POU) declined 20.32% or 2.80 points to end at 10.98 and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) shed 14.71% or 17.83 points to 103.37.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 737 to 619 and 197 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.88% to 18.75.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.19% or 2.10 to $1104.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.09% or 0.97 to hit $45.35 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.93% or 0.45 to trade at $48.13 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.13% to 0.7594, while CAD/EUR fell 0.24% to 0.6982.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.10% at 98.10.
