Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Industrials and REITs sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mullen Group Ltd . (TSX:MTL), which rose 9.27% or 1.23 points to trade at 14.50 at the close. Seabridge Gold Inc . (TSX:SEA) added 7.99% or 1.57 points to end at 21.23 and West Fraser Timber Co Ltd (TSX:WFG) was up 7.06% or 7.73 points to 117.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boyd Group Services Inc (TSX:BYD), which lost 8.17% or 20.44 points to trade at 229.88 in late trade. Storagevault Canada Inc (TSX:SVI) declined 5.94% or 0.30 points to end at 4.75 and Pan American Silver Corp (TSX:PAAS) shed 5.55% or 1.74 points to 29.61.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 494 to 455 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.17% to 14.03 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 2.26% or 54.60 to $2,361.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.76% or 0.59 to hit $78.18 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.72% or 0.59 to trade at $82.30 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.14% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.18% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 104.14.
