Proactive Investors - Active Energy Group PLC, the renewable energy business, has received two trademarks for the registration of CoalSwitch in the US and UK.
AEG described this as a significant advance as it looks to expand its intellectual property portfolio through the continuous development of its technology.
Chief executive Michael Rowan said: "The award of these two trademarks is an important step in the development of CoalSwitch as the market standard for black pellets.
“We are focused on protecting and growing our intellectual property portfolio as we deliver on our strategy of producing a next-generation biomass pellet."
CoalSwitch can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 99% compared to coal and up to 97% compared to natural gas, as shown by an independent report from Life Cycle Associates.
Additionally, testing carried out under the STEP programme has shown that the fuel can readily co-fire with coal, producing fewer pollutants and significantly reducing emissions.
In the same announcement, AEG said it has also renewed its Chain of Custody and Controlled Wood certifications that are compliant with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards for CoalSwitch
This confirms that it only uses forest-based materials from responsible sources and that all suppliers of AEG have committed to the strictest standards of forest management.
