Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Mining and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp (TO:LIF), which rose 8.71% or 1.18 points to trade at 14.73 at the close. Genworth MI Canada Inc . (TO:MIC) added 6.37% or 1.83 points to end at 30.57 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was up 5.61% or 1.50 points to 28.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF), which lost 6.33% or 0.20 points to trade at 2.96 in late trade. Colliers International Group (TO:CIG) declined 5.62% or 3.39 points to end at 56.97 and Sherritt International Corporation (TO:S) shed 5.36% or 0.06 points to 1.06.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 738 to 602 and 169 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.91% to 24.06.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.79% or 8.90 to $1124.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.29% or 0.59 to hit $46.84 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.50% or 0.25 to trade at $50.75 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.57% to 0.7580, while CAD/EUR rose 1.46% to 0.6810.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.47% at 96.33.
