(Bitcoin) hit an intraday high of $2,105.00 on the New York-based itBit exchange. It was up $97, or 4.85%, at $2,095.00 at 7:45 ET.
Since the start of the year, bitcoin has more than doubled in price. The value of bitcoins in circulation now totals more than $37.5 billion.
Ledger Holdings, the New York-based parent company of bitcoin options exchange LedgerX, said Monday it had closed a $11.4 million funding package led by Miami International Holdings and China's Huiyin Blockchain Venture Investments.
The funding supports LedgerX's plan to operate a regulated exchange and clearing house for bitcoin and other digital currencies.
LedgerX is awaiting regulatory approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to operate the first U.S. regulated exchange and clearing house for bitcoin options.
