Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Utilities, Materials and Mining sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.60%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD), which rose 11.39% or 0.46 points to trade at 4.50 at the close. Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) added 10.47% or 0.27 points to end at 2.85 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 9.58% or 16.00 points to 182.97 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Gildan Activewear Inc. (TO:GIL), which lost 7.62% or 3.48 points to trade at 42.18 in late trade. Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) declined 7.39% or 0.13 points to end at 1.63 and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO:MDA) shed 6.62% or 5.50 points to 77.54.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 739 to 648 and 176 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.41% to 13.73.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.57% or 6.20 to $1094.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 3.58% or 1.74 to hit $46.78 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 3.01% or 1.60 to trade at $51.70 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.55% to 0.7648, while CAD/EUR fell 1.05% to 0.6962.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.31% at 97.31.
