Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Financials, Mining and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Encana Corporation (TO:ECA), which rose 22.65% or 0.94 points to trade at 5.09 at the close. ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI) added 12.13% or 0.29 points to end at 2.68 and Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR) was up 9.48% or 0.29 points to 3.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb), which lost 9.23% or 0.12 points to trade at 1.18 in late trade. Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) declined 7.48% or 0.62 points to end at 7.67 and Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp (TO:LIF) shed 5.84% or 0.62 points to 9.99.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 646 to 605 and 332 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.81% to 25.58.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.61% or 7.50 to $1230.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.10% or 0.35 to hit $32.22 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 3.52% or 1.17 to trade at $34.44 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.79% to 0.7306, while CAD/EUR rose 0.85% to 0.6635.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.04% at 97.50.
