Hollywood A-lister Bill Murray had US$174,000 stolen from his crypto wallet just a day after raising the money through a charity auction, though the thieves were blocked from emptying his whole account.
According to reports over the weekend, the hackers started to ‘drain’ the Lost in Translation and Groundhog Day star's account at around 7pm, New York time, on Thursday.
The thieves removed 110 of the 119.2 of the ethereum cryptocurrency raised at the auction, worth around US$174,000, before the alarm was raised.
Attempts were also made to remove NFTs from the actor’s own personal collection in the wallet, said the reports but these were foiled by security measures in place.
The NFTS, which include pieces inspired by his life as well as by Damien Hirst, CryptoPunks, a Pudgy Penguin, a Cool Cat and Flower Girls have now been moved to a different wallet said a spokesman for his online security consultant Project Venkman.
The stolen ETH were sent to an address tied to the crypto exchange Binance and Uniochain, according to Venkman, which added the runner-up in the auction, for Murray's Chive charity, subsequently donated 120 ETH (around $187,500) to replace what was stolen.
