Nicole Elliott – Technical analyst & private - investor joins Zak Mir and Mike Ingram to discuss China and the troubles in emerging markets.
Malaysia demonstrating market fractals
Despite being a far more emerged market, following the current currency rout, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI index (FBM FTSE Malaysia KLCI) has seen decline since the heights it reached in 2014.
Saudi Arabia priority concerns
Following its peak in the summer of 2014, the Tadawul All Share has seen considerable decline. This is partly explained by the index’s key components (primarily oil, construction, and banks), which are struggling in the current economic climate. Mike Ingram believes this is due to a shift in the Saudi Arabian microstructure, with fundamentally different players involved in the market; however Zak Mir and Nicole Elliott discussed whether Saudi’s domestic issues, primarily the current market pressures on oil, highlight misaligned priorities.
Brazil’s Real returns to 2003 lows
Looking at data from the past two years, it’s evident that a very volatile Brazilian market has been in decline following huge losses on both their currency and their stock market. The market has retraced over 61% from the lows of 2003, and Elliott believes that this is a downward trend that is likely to persist.
