The Humane AI Pin is all set to launch on Nov. 9 and it has already been named by Time Magazine as one of the "Best Inventions of 2023". While the name suggests it has something to do with AI, what exactly is the Humane AI Pin and what does it do? We try to explain.

What Happened: Time Magazine has named Humane AI Pin as one of the "Best Inventions of 2023", alongside Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the module Framework Laptop 16.

Humane, started by two former Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) executives, envisions a screen-free future, a scene that seems like it's out of a sci-fi movie. While not a lot is known about the Humane AI Pin just yet, we now have our first clues.

Humane's first product will be powered by Microsoft Corp.-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Time's post offers another clue – the Humane AI Pin attaches to clothing magnetically. It allows users to ask questions, make calls, send texts, and more with voice commands.

This tiny device also comes with a built-in camera that can identify things and provide information like calorie estimates for a food item. You could likely point it at historical monuments, too, to know more about them instead of pulling out your phone.

Now here's the interesting part – according to a USPTO filing, Humane has a patent for a "body-worn device" that uses a "laser projection system".

Essentially, Humane AI Pin looks like a ChatGPT-powered projector device that can also serve as a personal assistant. It will project information on your palm using a laser projector, fulfilling Humane's screen-free goal.

In other words, think of it as a heads-up display attached to your clothing.

Why It Matters: Humane has raised $230 million from investors like Microsoft, OpenAI's Sam Altman, Tiger Global, Qualcomm Ventures, and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, among others.

The company also has over 200 employees on its roster already, suggesting that we could see more product launches down the line.

Apart from having former Apple employees on its roster, Humane has also partnered with Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) to use its chipsets to power its devices.

"Its revolutionary and sleek form factor is packed with powerful performance so that it can make sense of real-time contextual information and provide the wearer with a new and exciting experience,” said Dev Singh, VP of Business Development at Qualcomm.

While details are scant at the moment, we should know more about the Humane AI Pin come Nov. 9.
