Mary Trump, the niece of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday weighed in on her uncle’s backing of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) for the post of speaker of the House.

What Happened: “Jim Jordan is evil. Donald Trump is evil,” said Mary Trump in a post on X, formerly Twitter. She also quoted a post by the handle “Call to Activism” that said six former Oklahoma State University wrestlers came forward and accused the representative of taking no action in regards to complaints of sexual abuse against the players by a team doctor. “He shouldn’t be Speaker,” the user said in the post.

Mary Trump, who is a psychologist by profession, said, “Evil endorses evil.”

Why It’s Important: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) was ousted as speaker last week following a revolt by the right-wing GOP members of the House. He was accused of caving in to the demands of the Democratic party while reaching a short-term deal to avert a government shutdown.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga. ) was among the firebrand right-wingers who backed Donald Trump for the post of the speaker. Meanwhile, the former president endorsed Jordan for the post. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Jordan “will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”

House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) has also announced his candidacy.

What’s Next: The Republican members will deliberate on the candidates for speakership at a forum Tuesday, CNN reported. The vote will likely be held on Wednesday.

There could be others, such as Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), who could throw in their names as well.

A vacant speakership would place the House in a sort of political limbo.
