U.K. shares lower at close of trade; Investing.com United Kingdom 100 down 3.48%

Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil Equipment Services & Distribution, Oil & Gas Producers and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 declined 3.48% to hit a new 3-year low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Randgold Resources Ltd (L:RRS), which rose 3.47% or 148.00 points to trade at 4416.00 at the close. Sports Direct International PLC (L:SPD) added 2.31% or 9.100 points to end at 403.900 and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (L:RDSa) was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 points to 1365.00 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Glencore PLC (L:GLEN), which lost 9.85% or 7.7800 points to trade at 71.2000 in late trade. Anglo American PLC (L:AAL) declined 7.43% or 17.75 points to end at 221.05 and BHP Billiton PLC (L:BLT) shed 7.37% or 46.20 points to 580.90.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2149 to 190 and 297 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 1.41% or 15.40 to $1104.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 5.72% or 1.69 to hit $27.88 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 4.68% or 1.34 to trade at $27.41 a barrel.

GBP/USD was up 0.12% to 1.4177, while EUR/GBP fell 0.18% to 0.7694.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.13% at 99.04.
