UK faces soaring COVID-19 death rate unless it moves fast, medics warn

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will face an exponentially growing death rate from COVID-19 within weeks unless urgent action is taken to halt a rapidly spreading second wave of the outbreak, the country's senior medics said on Monday.

The United Kingdom already has the biggest official COVID-19 death toll in Europe - and the fifth largest in the world - while it is borrowing record amounts in an attempt to pump emergency money through the damaged economy.

But new COVID-19 cases are rising by at least 6,000 per day in Britain, according to week-old data, hospital admissions are doubling every eight days, and the testing system is buckling.

Chris Whitty, the government's chief medical officer, and Patrick Vallance, its chief scientific adviser, cautioned that if left unrestricted the epidemic would reach 50,000 new cases per day by mid-October in the United Kingdom.

"If this continued along the path...the number of deaths directly from COVID ... will continue to rise, potentially on an exponential curve, that means doubling and doubling and doubling again and you can quickly move from really quite small numbers to really very large numbers," Whitty said.

"If we don't do enough the virus will take off and at the moment that is the path that we are clearly on and if we do not change course then we're going to find ourselves in a very difficult problem."

The virus is spreading across all areas of the country and less than 8% of the population have antibodies to the virus, though in London around 17% of the population may have antibodies, Vallance said.

Speed and action are urgently needed, Vallance and Whitty said, adding that as winter was approaching the COVID problem would haunt Britain for another six months at least.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said new restrictions would be different to last time. The government wants to crack down on socialising but schools and many workplaces will stay open.

"GREAT CONCERN"

The chief medical officers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland recommended all four nations move up to COVID-19 alert "Level 4" - an epidemic is in general circulation; transmission is high or rising exponentially.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the leaders of the three devolved nations that rising COVID-19 cases were a cause for "great concern" and he was committed to working with their administrations to tackle the virus.

The Sun newspaper reported that Johnson would announce a 10 pm closing time for pubs, bars and restaurants. He is due to address parliament on the coronavirus issue on Tuesday.

Northern Ireland said it would extend existing restrictions in some localities on households mixing indoors across the whole of the province from Tuesday, while Wales slapped curbs on four more areas, also from Tuesday, leaving just under a third of the Welsh population under restriction.

The Welsh measures prevent people entering the areas without a reasonable excuse such as education or work. People will also only be able to meet people they don't live with outdoors.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that additional restrictions were almost certain to be imposed.

The official UK death toll stands at 41,788 people.

The so called UK “scientific advisor” needs to be sacked for scaremongering, also the secretary of state for health and social care (Mr Hancock) also needs to be sacked for complete incompetence.
Inhaled Interferon-beta SNG001 and SG016 with steroids is the most probable answer for a treatment and for testing it is the 'gold standard' from PrimerDesign 'WinterPlex' (https://novacyt.com/?s=winter) and Genesig (Novacyt companies - Lon:VCYT) for Antibodies (due launch) but they had better hurry up and decide what they are going to use - so long as politicians are held to account for any huge errors.
So why didn’t a Covid-19 outbreak occur outside Wuhan for months without social distancing and lockdowns? New studies suggest mutations might have made it more virulent. A Los Alamos National Laboratory study found that a single-letter mutation in the 614 gene, which appears to have emerged in Europe before March, altered the shape of the spike on the virus, enabling it to attach to cells more easily.
There is evidence that the virus may have been spreading longer than first assumed as Scientists in Italy reported traces of the covid-19 in wastewater collected from Milan and Turin from December 2019 - suggesting it was already circulating in northern Italy before China reported the first cases. This may suggest that there have been many more infections than tests can indicate and a higher population immunity rate than we may think.
Could be - there were people that I knew close by that all the symptoms described for C-19 back in early Dec 2019 (UK) - but no-one called it that then; we thought that it WAS JUST  a flu-strain - they survived but was a horrible experience - will WE ever know what really happened - far too embarrassing for politicians of all persuasions.
Here we go again
"as winter was approaching" ... yes, they said that in Feb, we must lock down to save the NHS from being overwhelmed. then they locked us down for far longer than was sensible, and now we're looking at another lockdown to "protect the NHS" all over again. Do they think we're as stupid as they and their embarrassingly useless modelling are?
It's not the same virus that began in Wuhan. The 614G strain in Europe is weaker, but more infectious. Look at the daily new cases vs daily new deaths for the major European countries inc UK. If it's such a risk, why aren't the government shielding the old and sick? Surely that should be the first action, not curb the movements of the young and healthy! It's a fiasco!
At Tesco st lawrence Ramsgate this morning . not o be person wearing a mask. Not One!...until there is compulsory mask wearing for both customers and staff then the UK is going to be catastrophic in a months time
So true young Rusty
are you sure? After all, very few people wore masks in Feb/Mar/Apr and the death rate, cases and hospitalisations came right down to next to nothing. Masks are not an answer at all.
The key reason cases are 'rising' is because the public are now getting tested at sites and with home kits, where as prior to this the cases were only those with severe symptoms and those that had to be hospitalised. For all we really know, cases could actually be decreasing but KNOWN cases are rising.
Wear a mask pls. It works. Singapore has a mandatory mask wearing policy and they less than 5 cases a day for past mth and ppl r moving abt freely now
Everyone wearing a mask is a sign of a country where almost everyone obeys the rules. There are a number of factors contributing to infection rates and most likely Singapore are adhering to many rules that some members in other countries ignore or are unable to do due to poor resources.
this scamdemic is beyond ridiculous.
When u iz dead coz of it we shall see if u r still saying the same thing
Is because same as americans to much partty to much cocaina and now is the moment of truth, lets see how now you enjoy the life selfish uk brexit and covid will take off you legs and se whow selfish are you right now
Second lock down is now inevitable with a strong likelihood of the UK's borders being closed because data shows it is spreading rapidly in Europe and transmission is happening in public places.
yeh another holiday
Second national is the very last result for a second national lockdown could put UK economy on its knees - Germany is same - what more can the government do
so sad situation all experts find vaccines nearly failed God help the world from this pandemic
God help the world? The mortality rate is less than 1% Only those morbities need to isolate, everyone else is fine. The lockdowns are to protect the politicians reputations, by exposing their running of public health. The death rates are vastly overstated.
Wake up
The infection fatality rate is approximately 99.8% so i am agreeing with you politicians have made a mess of this and trying to salvage their reputation which in mg ipinion is niw a joke
