The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) Non-Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) (also known as the ISM Services PMI) report on Business, is based on data compiled from monthly replies to questions asked of more than 370 purchasing and supply executives in over 62 different industries.

The New Orders subcategory is a diffusion index calculated by adding the percent of responses indicating they received more new orders versus the prior month plus one-half of those responding that they received same number of new orders versus the prior month. The resulting single index number is then seasonally adjusted.

Traders are most interested in what is most likely to happen in the future. Because new orders will need to be filled in the future, the component receives significant attention.A reading that is stronger than forecast is generally supportive (bullish) for the USD, while a weaker than forecast reading is generally negative (bearish) for the USD.
