The Retail Price Index was first calculated for June 1947 and was the principal official measure of inflation in the UK before the start of the CPI figure. The core RPI excludes mortgage payments. The core RPI excludes mortgage payments. Index-linked gilts are based in this inflation measure.

A reading that is stronger than forecast is generally supportive (bullish) for the GBP, while a weaker than forecast reading is generally negative (bearish) for the GBP.
