Investment Strategy

The Sub-fund aims to outperform (after deduction of costs) the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, as stated in sterling, by at least 2% per annum over rolling five-year periods. The Sub-fund will invest at least 90% in shares of emerging market companies being those which are listed, incorporated, domiciled or conducting a significant portion of their business in emerging markets. Emerging markets will be determined by the investment manager at its sole discretion. The Sub-fund will be actively managed and will invest in companies of any size and in any sector.

Prior to joining Baillie Gifford, Mr. Stobart spent three years working in Investment Banking in London. Mr. Stobart graduated MA in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1987. Mr. Stobart has been a member of the team since 2007.

Biography Mike Gush joined Baillie Gifford in 2003 and became a Partner of Baillie Gifford & Co in 2020. He first worked in the U.K. and Japanese Equities Teams before moving to the Emerging Markets Equity Team in 2005. Mr. Gush is a named manager for Baillie Gifford's emerging markets and China funds, as well as being responsible for the Emerging Markets Small Cap Strategy. He has also been involved with the Global Stewardship Strategy since its inception in 2015. He became a portfolio manager in 2006 and has researched all Emerging Markets during his career. Mr. Gush also has previous experience managing the Pacific Horizon Investment Trust and Baillie Gifford Pacific Fund. He is a CFA Charterholder and graduated MEng from the University of Durham in 2003. Mr. Gush has been a member of the team of portfolio managers in 2021.

Biography Ewan graduated MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University in 2000. He previously worked at Merrill Lynch and Newton as an Asia Pacific portfolio manager. Prior to joining Baillie Gifford in 2013, he was a Senior Vice President in Emerging Markets at PIMCO. Ewan is an Investment Manager in the Emerging Markets Equity Team.

Biography Richard graduated BSc (Econ) in Statistics from London School of Economics in 1993 and an MSc in Investment Analysis in 1994 from Stirling University. He joined Baillie Gifford in 1994 and became a Partner in 2004. With the exception of a year researching UK Smaller Companies, Richard has spent his career at Baillie Gifford covering the Emerging Markets and is Head of our Emerging Markets Equity Team. Richard is a member of the firm-wide Investment Advisory Group, Emerging Markets Investment Advisory Group and the Emerging Markets Product Group.

Biography Will graduated MA in History from the University of Glasgow in 1996. He joined Baillie Gifford in 1999 and worked as an Investment Analyst in the UK and North American Equity Teams before joining the Emerging Markets Equity Team in 2001, where he is an Investment Manager. Will became a Partner in 2010. Will is a member of the Emerging Markets Investment Advisory Group and Emerging Markets Product Group.

Biography Born 1962. Graduated MA in Philosophy from St. Andrews University (including University of California, Berkeley in 1982/83) and B.Phil in Philosophy from Brasenose College, Oxford. He joined Baillie Gifford in 1987 and became a Partner in 1998. He is currently Head of the Emerging Markets Investment Team and is a member of both the Investment Policy Committee and the Emerging Markets Investment Policy Committee.
