Proactive Investors - UK and Ireland have been confirmed as joint hosts for the 2028 European Championship, UEFA confirmed on Tuesday.
Made easier by the fact the two countries ran unopposed for the tournament after Turkey withdrew its bid to focus on hosting the Euro 2032 with Italy, the UK and Ireland were confirmed as hosts following a meeting in Nyon, Switzerland.
Having initially focused on being Europe's candidate for the 2030 World Cup, the countries switched their attention to the Euro's after FIFA announced Spain, Portugal and Morocco would be hosts.
Proposed host cities include Cardiff's Principality Stadium for the opening match and London's iconic Wembley Stadium for the final as well as Tottenham Hotspurs' state-of-the-art ground and Everton’s dockside arena, which is still under construction.
This marks the first time that the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Wales will host a major football tournament, although UEFA is yet to confirm whether all five host teams will receive an automatic qualification into the competition.
Estimated to be bringing in up to £2.6 billion in cumulative socio-economic benefits for the two nations, one area expected to benefit is grassroots clubs - non-professional teams- with facilities set to be improved for such organisations.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: "I grew up with Euro '96 being one of the most amazing memories of my childhood. And we have a chance to do that all over again for lots more people just like we did last year with the Lionesses.
“We host tournaments better than anyone else. It's going to be a massive boost for the economy. We're going to welcome millions of people to the country, and it's going to inspire a whole new generation."
