Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.31%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.88%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 7.25% or 14.00 points to trade at 207.12 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 1.12% or 4.81 points to end at 432.68 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.95% or 3.16 points to 335.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 3.40% or 7.91 points to trade at 224.53 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 2.63% or 5.25 points to end at 194.36 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 2.43% or 4.62 points to 185.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) which rose 7.25% to 207.12, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was up 5.26% to settle at 294.53 and FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which gained 4.00% to close at 57.19.
The worst performers were Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 7.85% to 11.04 in late trade, Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which lost 5.56% to settle at 28.05 and Nextera Energy Inc (NYSE:NEE) which was down 5.50% to 72.74 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust Inc (NASDAQ:WHLR) which rose 70.70% to 2.68, Airship AI Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AISP) which was up 47.13% to settle at 4.62 and Streamline Health Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:STRM) which gained 38.98% to close at 0.64.
The worst performers were Biosig Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:BSGM) which was down 72.19% to 0.47 in late trade, CalAmp Corp (NASDAQ:CAMP) which lost 38.50% to settle at 0.40 and Visionary Education Technology Holdings Group Inc (NASDAQ:GV) which was down 32.94% to 3.40 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1727 to 1105 and 93 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1776 fell and 1575 advanced, while 131 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.86% to 12.85.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.27% or 6.25 to $2,333.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.37% or 0.29 to hit $78.03 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.42% or 0.34 to trade at $81.97 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 157.10.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.25% at 104.85.
