FTSE 100 today: Index rises, GBP higher, Burberry recovers, GSK falls
Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.22%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.46% or 1.13 points to trade at 78.27 at the close. Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) added 1.25% or 4.46 points to end at 362.22 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 0.74% or 1.52 points to 207.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 1.54% or 2.15 points to trade at 137.40 in late trade. Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.52% or 4.21 points to end at 271.86 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.35% or 0.59 points to 43.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) which rose 6.16% to 50.29, NXP Semiconductors NV (NASDAQ:NXPI) which was up 5.56% to settle at 210.02 and FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which gained 5.05% to close at 42.24.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 8.43% to 88.57 in late trade, CrowdStrike Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CRWD) which lost 5.77% to settle at 460.56 and Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was down 4.31% to 299.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mullen Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:MULN) which rose 198.70% to 16.10, K Wave Media Ltd (NASDAQ:KWM) which was up 133.33% to settle at 4.48 and Liminatus Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:LIMN) which gained 123.77% to close at 12.71.
The worst performers were CTRL Group Ltd (NASDAQ:MCTR) which was down 53.19% to 15.40 in late trade, Ptl Inc (NASDAQ:PTLE) which lost 43.63% to settle at 0.41 and ReShape Lifesciences Inc (NASDAQ:RSLS) which was down 28.44% to 4.83 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1421 to 1329 and 86 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1671 rose and 1637 declined, while 124 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.51% to 17.60.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.62% or 21.10 to $3,398.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.07% or 0.68 to hit $62.73 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.22% or 0.80 to trade at $64.83 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.14, while USD/JPY fell 0.79% to 142.83.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 98.76.
