Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.54%, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.15% or 1.76 points to trade at 154.68 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 0.49% or 0.88 points to end at 180.06 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was down 0.16% or 0.14 points to 86.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.08% or 8.11 points to trade at 125.33 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 4.97% or 1.65 points to end at 31.55 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 4.91% or 7.36 points to 142.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Everest Re Group Ltd (NYSE:RE) which rose 3.11% to 267.50, STERIS plc (NYSE:STE) which was up 2.76% to settle at 167.29 and W. R. Berkley Corp (NYSE:WRB) which gained 2.73% to close at 65.18.
The worst performers were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 24.60% to 65.16 in late trade, SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which lost 8.27% to settle at 235.56 and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 7.91% to 43.64 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Senti Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SNTI) which rose 50.71% to 2.11, Avalon Globocare Corp (NASDAQ:AVCO) which was up 25.85% to settle at 0.70 and TuanChe ADR (NASDAQ:TC) which gained 25.31% to close at 3.07.
The worst performers were Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) which was down 54.82% to 33.95 in late trade, Lion Group Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:LGHL) which lost 49.25% to settle at 1.01 and Twin Vee Powercats Co (NASDAQ:VEEE) which was down 29.01% to 2.52 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2617 to 542 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2839 fell and 961 advanced, while 223 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.50% to 31.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.09% or 1.55 to $1,668.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.54% or 0.44 to hit $81.71 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.53% or 0.47 to trade at $87.58 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.71% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 144.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.36% at 112.11.
