Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.07%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.79%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.82%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 0.92% or 3.12 points to trade at 341.27 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.25% or 0.48 points to end at 191.81 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.16% or 0.25 points to 151.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 2.83% or 8.78 points to trade at 302.02 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.35% or 2.32 points to end at 96.31 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 2.30% or 4.03 points to 170.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which rose 3.96% to 44.89, Sealed Air Corporation (NYSE:SEE) which was up 2.47% to settle at 40.28 and Garmin Ltd (NYSE:GRMN) which gained 2.05% to close at 107.41.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 4.25% to 118.29 in late trade, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which lost 3.94% to settle at 66.14 and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 3.87% to 47.33 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were EdtechX Holdings Acquisition Corp II (NASDAQ:EDTX) which rose 94.05% to 22.95, Caribou Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CRBU) which was up 45.59% to settle at 5.94 and Mullen Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:MULN) which gained 29.02% to close at 0.22.
The worst performers were Allarity Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALLR) which was down 53.99% to 3.81 in late trade, VBI Vaccines Inc (NASDAQ:VBIV) which lost 51.24% to settle at 1.18 and Alpine Summit Energy Partners Inc (NASDAQ:ALPS) which was down 48.52% to 0.29 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2535 to 473 and 50 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2666 fell and 856 advanced, while 156 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.89% to 15.44 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.57% or 11.00 to $1,916.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.10% or 0.07 to hit $71.86 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.10 to trade at $76.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.34% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.36% to 144.12.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.21% at 102.82.
