Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.66%, while the S&P 500 index added 2.59%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 5.61% or 8.06 points to trade at 151.73 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 4.66% or 1.20 points to end at 26.97 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 4.36% or 7.15 points to 171.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 0.10% or 0.16 points to trade at 163.20 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) added 1.12% or 0.63 points to end at 56.65 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) gained 1.66% or 1.43 points to 87.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which rose 10.58% to 24.97, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 9.10% to settle at 37.30 and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which gained 8.65% to close at 65.33.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 8.61% to 242.40 in late trade, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which lost 2.97% to settle at 42.54 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 2.70% to 6.84 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were LogicBio Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:LOGC) which rose 637.61% to 2.01, Fednat Holding Co (NASDAQ:FNHC) which was up 308.70% to settle at 0.47 and Oblong Inc (NASDAQ:OBLG) which gained 167.02% to close at 0.40.
The worst performers were Xperi Corp (NASDAQ:XPER) which was down 41.85% to 15.12 in late trade, Clene Inc. (NASDAQ:CLNN) which lost 28.21% to settle at 2.01 and Nuwellis Inc (NASDAQ:NUWE) which was down 22.10% to 0.42 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2726 to 493 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2818 rose and 1032 declined, while 274 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.81% to 30.10.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 2.19% or 36.65 to $1,708.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 4.76% or 3.78 to hit $83.27 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 4.12% or 3.51 to trade at $88.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.24% to 0.98, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 144.66.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.45% at 111.58.
