Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.09% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 2.10% or 7.09 points to trade at 344.18 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.99% or 1.98 points to end at 101.67 and Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.99% or 4.05 points to 207.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which lost 0.92% or 2.44 points to trade at 263.00 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.11% or 0.11 points to end at 96.95 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) gained 0.06% or 0.16 points to 252.59.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which rose 7.11% to 96.90, CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was up 6.46% to settle at 76.93 and Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which gained 6.08% to close at 113.17.
The worst performers were Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NYSE:DECK) which was down 4.86% to 893.37 in late trade, Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) which lost 2.88% to settle at 69.27 and Kenvue Inc (NYSE:KVUE) which was down 2.85% to 17.70 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Fresh2 Group Ltd DRC (NASDAQ:FRES) which rose 820.38% to 2.89, Kazia Therapeutics Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:KZIA) which was up 248.02% to settle at 0.67 and Inspire Veterinary Partners Inc (NASDAQ:IVP) which gained 110.23% to close at 7.40.
The worst performers were Zapp Electric Vehicles Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ZAPP) which was down 47.91% to 9.35 in late trade, Shineco Inc (NASDAQ:SISI) which lost 44.79% to settle at 2.49 and CVRx Inc (NASDAQ:CVRX) which was down 38.52% to 7.15 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2094 to 732 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2039 rose and 1280 declined, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.72% to 12.85.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.43% or 10.30 to $2,378.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.23% or 1.00 to hit $82.41 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.83% or 0.70 to trade at $85.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 161.71.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 104.70.
