Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.98%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 3.67% or 5.82 points to trade at 164.56 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 3.64% or 4.41 points to end at 125.61 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 3.06% or 4.73 points to 159.31 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.40% or 0.70 points to trade at 28.46 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 0.75% or 1.77 points to end at 232.95 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.72% or 1.05 points to 144.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were First Republic Bank (NYSE:FRC) which rose 29.56% to 15.78, KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) which was up 9.34% to settle at 12.76 and Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) which gained 9.11% to close at 48.63.
The worst performers were Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE:ATO) which was down 4.05% to 110.23 in late trade, Consolidated Edison Inc (NYSE:ED) which lost 3.84% to settle at 93.19 and Digital Realty Trust Inc (NYSE:DLR) which was down 3.77% to 97.83 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Quince Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:QNCX) which rose 71.10% to 1.44, Cerberus Cyber Sentinel Corp (NASDAQ:CISO) which was up 67.87% to settle at 0.39 and Pear Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PEAR) which gained 59.88% to close at 0.34.
The worst performers were Qutoutiao Inc (NASDAQ:QTT) which was down 58.94% to 0.30 in late trade, Altimmune Inc (NASDAQ:ALT) which lost 54.67% to settle at 4.95 and Check Cap Ltd (NASDAQ:CHEK) which was down 42.24% to 1.75 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2332 to 700 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2700 rose and 921 declined, while 169 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.47% to 21.38.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.98% or 39.20 to $1,943.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.52% or 1.71 to hit $69.53 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.04 to trade at $75.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 132.47.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 102.85.
