Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.62%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.58%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 3.54% or 1.87 points to trade at 54.71 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 3.41% or 12.91 points to end at 391.16 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 2.08% or 2.84 points to 139.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.82% or 1.48 points to trade at 79.92 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.43% or 1.64 points to end at 113.09 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.38% or 1.98 points to 141.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which rose 14.73% to 109.88, Jabil Circuit Inc (NYSE:JBL) which was up 11.65% to settle at 126.65 and Estee Lauder Companies Inc (NYSE:EL) which gained 10.01% to close at 100.78.
The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 12.19% to 402.28 in late trade, Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which lost 6.46% to settle at 168.86 and Targa Resources Inc (NYSE:TRGP) which was down 5.94% to 146.31 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Fangdd Network Group Ltd (NASDAQ:DUO) which rose 109.97% to 1.07, Telesis Bio Inc (NASDAQ:TBIO) which was up 71.33% to settle at 3.99 and Alpha Technology Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ATGL) which gained 71.16% to close at 3.68.
The worst performers were Expion360 Inc (NASDAQ:XPON) which was down 23.33% to 0.06 in late trade, Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) which lost 22.53% to settle at 9.65 and MDxHealth SA ADR (NASDAQ:MDXH) which was down 21.26% to 2.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1754 to 1050 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2083 rose and 1176 declined, while 150 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.26% to 15.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.40% or 10.65 to $2,695.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.26% or 2.27 to hit $67.42 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 2.91% or 2.12 to trade at $70.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.39% to 1.12, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 144.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 100.31.
