Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.48%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.30% or 0.68 points to trade at 53.00 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 0.76% or 0.55 points to end at 72.51 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.59% or 0.90 points to 153.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 2.62% or 1.76 points to trade at 65.41 in late trade. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) declined 2.38% or 3.07 points to end at 126.15 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.73% or 0.97 points to 55.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which rose 4.67% to 13.67, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was up 4.16% to settle at 22.56 and Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which gained 3.45% to close at 46.54.
The worst performers were Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc (NYSE:CCE) which was down 24.68% to 38.83 in late trade, Constellation Brands Inc (NYSE:STZ) which lost 2.97% to settle at 153.15 and EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) which was down 2.62% to 65.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were BOS Better Online Solutions (NASDAQ:BOSC) which rose 87.56% to 4.070, Celator Pharm (NASDAQ:CPXX) which was up 71.59% to settle at 30.08 and Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which gained 57.14% to close at 0.3300.
The worst performers were StemCells Inc (NASDAQ:STEM) which was down 81.19% to 0.5700 in late trade, Paragon Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:PRGN) which lost 18.49% to settle at 0.7499 and Sears Canada Inc (NASDAQ:SRSC) which was down 16.37% to 2.810 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1780 to 1541 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1430 rose and 1142 declined, while 65 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.07% to 14.31.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.07% or 0.85 to $1217.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.81% or 0.40 to hit $48.93 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.41% or 0.71 to trade at $49.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.08% to 1.1130, while USD/JPY fell 0.38% to 110.70.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.11% at 95.83.
