Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.78%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.70%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which fell 0.10% or 0.10 points to trade at 103.78 at the close. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) fell 0.11% or 0.16 points to end at 142.80 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was down 0.35% or 0.14 points to 39.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.77% or 1.04 points to trade at 57.87 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.66% or 0.53 points to end at 31.32 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.40% or 1.67 points to 117.65.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Citrix Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CTXS) which rose 2.16% to 71.91, United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which was up 1.92% to settle at 91.44 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which gained 1.71% to close at 40.70.
The worst performers were CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which was down 4.10% to 25.26 in late trade, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which lost 3.48% to settle at 23.01 and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which was down 2.75% to 84.21 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Interphase Corporation (NASDAQ:INPH) which rose 72.06% to 1.17, Cleveland BioLabs Inc (NASDAQ:CBLI) which was up 30.95% to settle at 3.300 and Sky-mobi Limited (NASDAQ:MOBI) which gained 18.84% to close at 6.370.
The worst performers were Corbus Pharmaceuticals Holding (NASDAQ:CRBP) which was down 11.52% to 3.15 in late trade, Agios Pharm (NASDAQ:AGIO) which lost 10.16% to settle at 110.13 and Modsys International Ltd (NASDAQ:MDSY) which was down 14.01% to 1.780 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2162 to 964 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1618 fell and 1160 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.24% to 13.78.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to $1180.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.21% or 0.73 to hit $60.03 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.08% or 1.35 to trade at $63.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1262, while USD/JPY fell 0.04% to 123.37.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.01% at 94.98.
