Benzinga - by Chris Katje, Benzinga Staff Writer.

Fans of the popular Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) series “Squid Game” might not make it to the bar the night before Thanksgiving Day or to their family dinners this year. The record-breaking series is back but, this time, as a reality competition.

What Happened: Netflix is releasing “Squid Game: The Challenge” on Nov. 22 (the day before Thanksgiving), a 10-episode reality show featuring 456 contestants who compete in challenges drawn from the record-breaking series.

A new trailer highlights some of the challenges from the competition as well as the $4.56 million cash prize that the winner will take home.

“Though the reality version of ‘Squid Game’ isn’t a matter of life or death, there’s still a lot on the line: 456 players will compete to win $4.56 million, the largest cash prize in reality television history,” Netflix said in a blog post.

Contestants will be tested along the way, by potentially forming alliances or betraying one another during the competition, according to the post.

“People do a whole lot worse for a whole lot less,” one contestant says in the trailer.

Benzinga previously reported that medics were called to the set of the series, which was filmed in the United Kingdom, due to freezing conditions and injuries.

The popular "Red Light Green Light challenge" kicks off the competition. According to a previous report, only 228 contestants survived the popular challenge and moved onto the next round.

Why It’s Important: With its Netflix premiere in 2021, “Squid Game” quickly became the platform's top series.

The show was watched by 142 million households following the first 28 days of its premiere.

Popular YouTuber MrBeast even launched a real-life challenge that saw 456 people compete for a $456,000 prize. To date, his video of the challenge has over 500 million views, making the clip his most-watched.

In June, Netflix confirmed that a second season of “Squid Game” would be coming to the platform. No release date of the highly anticipated sequel has been announced.

The streaming company also invested more in South Korean content after the success of “Squid Game.”

Netflix ended the second quarter with 238.39 million global paid subscribers.

NFLX Price Action: Netflix shares trade at $379.81 versus a 52-week trading range of $211.73 to $485. Shares of the streaming company are up 29% year-to-date in 2023 and up over 60% in the last year.
