Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.66%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.78%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.88%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.57% or 2.10 points to trade at 136.05 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.58% or 1.22 points to end at 78.46 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.48% or 0.74 points to 50.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which lost 0.59% or 0.79 points to trade at 134.01 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 0.46% or 0.67 points to end at 145.27 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 0.40% or 0.11 points to 27.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which rose 6.77% to 94.28, Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) which was up 5.51% to settle at 48.61 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) which gained 3.68% to close at 683.85.
The worst performers were Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which was down 5.93% to 20.48 in late trade, Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which lost 4.69% to settle at 12.80 and Helmerich & Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which was down 4.64% to 63.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ultrapetrol Ltd (NASDAQ:ULTR) which rose 86.25% to 0.5200, QKL Stores Inc (NASDAQ:QKLS) which was up 54.33% to settle at 0.7099 and Porter Bancorp Inc (NASDAQ:PBIB) which gained 12.50% to close at 2.250.
The worst performers were Bind Therap (NASDAQ:BIND) which was down 73.77% to 0.38 in late trade, Nephrogenex (NASDAQ:NRX) which lost 64.58% to settle at 0.1700 and Paragon Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:PRGN) which was down 42.80% to 1.5100 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2026 to 1297 and 36 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1485 rose and 1105 declined, while 65 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.75% to 14.64.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.19% or 2.45 to $1292.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.20% or 1.01 to hit $44.91 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 3.10% or 1.47 to trade at $45.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.66% to 1.1530, while USD/JPY fell 0.04% to 106.41.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.49% at 92.56.
