Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Linamar Corporation (TSX:LNR), which rose 5.72% or 3.89 points to trade at 71.84 at the close. BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB) added 5.46% or 0.31 points to end at 5.99 and Centerra Gold Inc (TSX:CG) was up 5.39% or 0.46 points to 9.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Spartan Delta Corp (TSX:SDE), which lost 11.24% or 1.69 points to trade at 13.34 in late trade. TC Energy Corp (TSX:TRP) declined 5.62% or 3.22 points to end at 54.11 and Superior Plus Corp (TSX:SPB) shed 4.74% or 0.51 points to 10.25.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 534 to 442 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 13.77% to 11.96 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.12% or 21.75 to $1,967.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.54% or 2.00 to hit $76.87 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.66% or 2.27 to trade at $83.19 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR fell 0.96% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.91% at 100.99.
