Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Industrials and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Spartan Energy Corp (TO:SPE), which rose 8.54% or 0.280 points to trade at 3.560 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 8.50% or 0.46 points to end at 5.87 and Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF) was up 7.68% or 0.70 points to 9.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG), which lost 5.93% or 0.38 points to trade at 6.03 in late trade. Chartwell Retirement Residences (TO:CSH_u) declined 4.75% or 0.76 points to end at 15.24 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) shed 3.47% or 0.41 points to 11.39.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 687 to 451 and 139 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.18% to 15.25.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to $1269.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.20% or 1.07 to hit $49.76 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.83% or 0.93 to trade at $51.80 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.11% to 0.7588, while CAD/EUR rose 0.06% to 0.6769.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.03% at 96.13.
