Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.53% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Linamar Corporation (TSX:LNR), which rose 10.62% or 6.39 points to trade at 66.58 at the close. Element Fleet Management Corp (TSX:EFN) added 10.30% or 1.56 points to end at 16.71 and Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) was up 9.70% or 0.70 points to 7.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pan American Silver Corp (TSX:PAAS), which lost 15.81% or 4.27 points to trade at 22.73 in late trade. Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX:FVI) declined 9.95% or 0.37 points to end at 3.35 and Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) shed 5.57% or 0.59 points to 10.01.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 572 to 415 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.04% to 17.73 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.56% or 10.20 to $1,803.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.50% or 2.30 to hit $94.23 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.23% or 2.17 to trade at $99.57 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.17% to 0.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 105.00.
