Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.25% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which rose 13.48% or 0.190 points to trade at 1.600 at the close. Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TO:SSL) added 5.44% or 0.340 points to end at 6.590 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TO:BBU_u) was up 4.08% or 1.77 points to 45.10 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TO:APH), which lost 13.79% or 2.960 points to trade at 18.500 in late trade. Canopy Growth Corp (TO:WEED) declined 9.92% or 3.560 points to end at 32.340 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) shed 6.64% or 0.29 points to 4.08.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 631 to 497 and 128 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.51% or 6.70 to $1325.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.45% or 0.28 to hit $61.91 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.19% or 0.13 to trade at $67.97 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.34% to 0.8005, while CAD/EUR fell 0.09% to 0.6632.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 91.59.
