Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.11%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.88%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.94%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 0.42% or 0.33 points to trade at 78.12 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 0.31% or 0.09 points to end at 27.52 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.10% or 0.04 points to 40.55 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 2.24% or 2.71 points to trade at 118.29 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 1.80% or 1.92 points to end at 104.98 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 1.72% or 2.62 points to 150.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CBRE Group Inc (NYSE:CBG) which rose 6.32% to 38.71, Kohl's Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which was up 2.13% to settle at 78.25 and Western Union Company (NYSE:WU) which gained 2.01% to close at 20.81.
The worst performers were Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ:CELG) which was down 3.95% to 115.28 in late trade, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which lost 3.86% to settle at 173.30 and Kraft Foods Group Inc (NASDAQ:KRFT) which was down 3.84% to 87.13 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which rose 59.84% to 3.90, Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ:NYMX) which was up 27.27% to settle at 0.840 and Hong Kong Television Network Ltd (NASDAQ:HKTV) which gained 25.76% to close at 9.57.
The worst performers were Axion Power International Inc (NASDAQ:AXPW) which was down 28.06% to 0.040 in late trade, Appliance Recycling Centers (NASDAQ:ARCI) which lost 19.29% to settle at 2.05 and Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:SNTA) which was down 16.74% to 1.94 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1812 to 1000 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1713 fell and 1078 advanced, while 12 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.44% to 15.30.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.16% or 1.90 to $1183.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.30% or 1.12 to hit $47.56 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.93% or 1.08 to trade at $55.20 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.82% to 1.0744, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 120.03.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.39% at 98.69.
