Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.50% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.81%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 0.80% or 0.92 points to trade at 116.55 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 0.57% or 0.31 points to end at 54.74 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was down 0.12% or 0.17 points to 137.11 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 3.93% or 2.36 points to trade at 57.67 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 3.34% or 1.99 points to end at 57.61 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 3.02% or 3.82 points to 122.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which rose 4.21% to 36.62, Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc (NYSE:DPS) which was up 3.98% to settle at 95.85 and Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which gained 3.96% to close at 90.31.
The worst performers were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was down 11.83% to 42.18 in late trade, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which lost 9.89% to settle at 20.87 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which was down 9.43% to 23.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Heartware International Inc (NASDAQ:HTWR) which rose 92.76% to 57.79, Fibrocell S (NASDAQ:FCSC) which was up 33.01% to settle at 1.370 and Akers Biosc (NASDAQ:AKER) which gained 32.29% to close at 2.540.
The worst performers were Proteostasis Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTI) which was down 19.06% to 12.36 in late trade, EyeGate Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:EYEG) which lost 17.38% to settle at 2.520 and Iao Kun Group Holding Co Ltd (NASDAQ:IKGH) which was down 16.94% to 1.030 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2679 to 637 and 23 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2232 fell and 367 advanced, while 34 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.08% to 23.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.55% or 7.30 to $1329.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.06% or 0.98 to hit $46.66 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.77% or 0.87 to trade at $48.17 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.87% to 1.1020, while USD/JPY fell 0.18% to 102.05.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.97% at 96.56.
