Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.07%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (N:PFE), which rose 1.89% or 0.54 points to trade at 29.10 at the close. Home Depot Inc (N:HD) added 1.80% or 2.01 points to end at 113.86 and EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD) was up 1.60% or 0.93 points to 59.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (N:CVX), which lost 3.57% or 3.07 points to trade at 82.92 in late trade. International Business Machines (N:IBM) declined 2.29% or 2.91 points to end at 124.07 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (N:WMT) shed 1.61% or 1.08 points to 65.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Owens-Illinois Inc (N:OI) which rose 9.99% to 13.54, Martin Marietta Materials Inc (N:MLM) which was up 9.36% to settle at 128.88 and Masco Corporation (N:MAS) which gained 8.23% to close at 25.39.
The worst performers were Viacom B Inc (O:VIAB) which was down 21.48% to 32.86 in late trade, HCP Inc (N:HCP) which lost 16.65% to settle at 28.33 and CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) which was down 11.93% to 7.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Truett Hurs (O:THST) which rose 62.39% to 1.77, Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (O:BLPH) which was up 43.43% to settle at 2.84 and FreeSeas Inc (O:FREE) which gained 29.09% to close at 0.0710.
The worst performers were Vapor Corp (O:VPCO) which was down 60.53% to 0.0015 in late trade, Sfx Enterta (O:SFXE) which lost 53.01% to settle at 0.0125 and Alphatec Holdings Inc (O:ATEC) which was down 31.84% to 0.2590 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2317 to 1056 and 18 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1683 fell and 911 advanced, while 55 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.08% to 26.54.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.72% or 8.60 to $1189.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 4.60% or 1.36 to hit $28.32 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 6.46% or 2.12 to trade at $30.75 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.92% to 1.1296, while USD/JPY fell 0.65% to 115.10.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.75% at 96.03.
