Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Financials, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.63%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 1.92% or 1.29 points to trade at 68.42 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.43% or 1.20 points to end at 85.21 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.38% or 0.73 points to 53.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 3.63% or 3.15 points to trade at 83.55 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.50% or 8.56 points to end at 235.74 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 1.41% or 0.46 points to 32.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Noble Energy Inc (NYSE:NBL) which rose 7.11% to 40.05, PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which was up 6.18% to settle at 94.83 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which gained 5.03% to close at 15.34.
The worst performers were Comerica Incorporated (NYSE:CMA) which was down 6.51% to 65.37 in late trade, Navient Cor (NASDAQ:NAVI) which lost 6.41% to settle at 15.77 and Regions Financial Corporation (NYSE:RF) which was down 6.13% to 13.78 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pulmatrix Inc (NASDAQ:PULM) which rose 127.97% to 1.550, Benitec Biopharma Ltd (NASDAQ:BNTC) which was up 62.16% to settle at 3.0000 and Yulong Eco-Materials Ltd (NASDAQ:YECO) which gained 49.39% to close at 1.278.
The worst performers were Alcobra Ltd (NASDAQ:ADHD) which was down 50.66% to 0.94 in late trade, EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ:ETRM) which lost 35.04% to settle at 8.9000 and Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was down 32.17% to 4.8500 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1769 to 1456 and 38 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1859 fell and 708 advanced, while 67 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.61% to 11.86.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 1.60% or 19.15 to $1215.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.29% or 0.15 to hit $52.52 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.64% or 0.36 to trade at $55.50 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.99% to 1.0706, while USD/JPY fell 1.29% to 112.73.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.18% at 100.33.
