Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.80%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Intertain Group (TO:IT), which rose 6.91% or 0.80 points to trade at 12.37 at the close. Black Diamond Group Limited (TO:BDI) added 3.65% or 0.33 points to end at 9.37 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) was up 3.18% or 0.09 points to 2.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE), which lost 11.63% or 0.60 points to trade at 4.56 in late trade. Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE) declined 8.75% or 0.21 points to end at 2.19 and Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) shed 8.62% or 0.15 points to 1.59.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 781 to 510 and 209 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.79% to 24.14.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.44% or 4.90 to $1129.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.56% or 1.65 to hit $44.71 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 2.55% or 1.25 to trade at $47.83 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7497, while CAD/EUR fell 0.96% to 0.6706.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.10% at 96.40.
