Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.04%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.21% or 0.39 points to trade at 32.64 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.06% or 1.22 points to end at 115.86 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 1.01% or 1.73 points to 172.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 6.76% or 5.03 points to trade at 69.33 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.18% or 1.33 points to end at 111.19 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 1.01% or 0.80 points to 78.16.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Owens-Illinois Inc (NYSE:OI) which rose 9.21% to 25.98, Williams Companies Inc (NYSE:WMB) which was up 6.21% to settle at 53.21 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which gained 5.84% to close at 21.39.
The worst performers were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) which was down 6.76% to 69.33 in late trade, Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which lost 4.21% to settle at 5.46 and CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which was down 3.87% to 31.29 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were One Horizon (NASDAQ:OHGI) which rose 142.33% to 2.63, Giga-tronics Incorporated (NASDAQ:GIGA) which was up 61.71% to settle at 2.830 and Inventergy (NASDAQ:INVT) which gained 33.87% to close at 0.410.
The worst performers were EZchip Semiconductor Limited (NASDAQ:EZCH) which was down 24.17% to 14.84 in late trade, Torchlight Energ (NASDAQ:TRCH) which lost 17.11% to settle at 0.804 and Interphase Corporation (NASDAQ:INPH) which was down 16.65% to 0.51 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1574 to 1561 and 4 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1398 rose and 1394 declined, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.72% to 13.76.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.93% or 23.00 to $1215.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.09% or 0.66 to hit $60.09 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.71% or 0.48 to trade at $66.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.21% to 1.1349, while USD/JPY fell 0.57% to 119.19.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.00% at 93.75.
