Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.84%, while the S&P 500 index lost 2.96%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.94%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which fell 1.45% or 0.57 points to trade at 38.75 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) fell 1.41% or 0.91 points to end at 63.82 and McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was down 1.63% or 1.55 points to 93.47 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which lost 4.20% or 3.16 points to trade at 72.08 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 4.26% or 4.80 points to end at 107.96 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 4.13% or 2.65 points to 61.45.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE:CVC) which rose 1.95% to 25.66, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was up 0.56% to settle at 39.20 and Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (NASDAQ:SIAL) which gained 0.02% to close at 139.44.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 8.67% to 69.65 in late trade, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which lost 8.18% to settle at 9.77 and Joy Global Inc (NYSE:JOY) which was down 7.93% to 22.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Gyrodyne Company of America Inc (NASDAQ:GYRO) which rose 985.09% to 30.39, Ascent Solar Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:ASTI) which was up 107.31% to settle at 0.210 and Trevena Inc (NASDAQ:TRVN) which gained 51.50% to close at 9.09.
The worst performers were Axion Power International Inc (NASDAQ:AXPW) which was down 27.45% to 1.850 in late trade, ZaZa Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:ZAZA) which lost 18.39% to settle at 0.40 and Heat Biolog (NASDAQ:HTBX) which was down 17.90% to 3.99 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2299 to 252 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2100 fell and 493 advanced, while 18 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.07% to 31.01.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.62% or 7.00 to $1139.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 7.88% or 3.88 to hit $45.33 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 8.65% or 4.68 to trade at $49.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.82% to 1.1305, while USD/JPY fell 1.28% to 119.67.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.61% at 95.38.
