Investing.com – Electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has confirmed that customers can now use Bitcoin as a payment method for its vehicles.
The company first suggested this would be the case in recent filings with the SEC when they also said they had bought $1.5bln worth of Bitcoin to diversify their reserves.
“We expect to begin accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt,” the car maker said in a statement in February.
Musk Tweets
In a series of tweets this morning, Elon Musk confirmed the news.
“You can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin,” Musk tweeted.
The service is currently only available for customers in the US but Musk added that ‘Pay by Bitcoin’ capability outside the US will be available later this year.
Musk also added that the Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin and not converted to fiat currency.
