(Reuters) - President Joe Biden's U.S. administration is privately encouraging Ukraine’s leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, the Washington Post reported.

FIGHTING, CONFLICT

* The White House National Security Council had no immediate comment on the accuracy of the Post report. A State Department spokesperson said: "The Kremlin continues to escalate this war. The Kremlin has demonstrated its unwillingness to seriously engage in negotiations since even before it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine."

* Ukraine's Russian-held Nova Kakhovka dam was damaged in shelling by Ukrainian forces, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday, citing emergency services. The reports provided no evidence to support the allegation, which could not be immediately verified by Reuters.

* Iran acknowledged for the first time that it had supplied drones to Moscow, but said they were sent before the war in Ukraine, where Russia has used them to target power stations and civilian infrastructure.

* External power has been restored to Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant two days after it was disconnected from the power grid after Russian shelling damaged high voltage lines, the United Nations nuclear watchdog said.

* The operator of Ukraine's grid, targeted by Russian air strikes in recent weeks, said it would step up rolling blackouts in Kyiv and seven Ukrainian regions in response to what it said was increased electricity consumption.

* Ukrainian attackers shot and seriously injured a judge in an eastern Russian-controlled region of Ukraine who sentenced three foreigners to death in June, a pro-Moscow official said.

DIPLOMACY

* German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, under fire for a Friday trip to Beijing with German CEOs, said his joint statement with Chinese President Xi Jinping opposing the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine had been reason enough for the visit.

ECONOMY

* Georgia is on course to become one of the world's fastest-growing economies this year following a dramatic influx of more than 100,000 Russians since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin's mobilisation drive to drum up war recruits.

Hi jameel
Russia speed running into North Korea 2.0
Russian leaders are now new world terrorists.

I cant wait to see war stops and markets sling shot to the upside 🤩🤩
all in
US trying to survive with the war material sales at the cost of NATO nations and hardships of Ukarainians.
Yes, Mr Putin.
Putin single handedly destroying Russia for generations.
you mean soon to be Chinese province of Moscow? 😅
Here's hoping Vladamir Putin gets his 'all is fair in love and war' soon! @Anurag Budhe
Putler
All is Fair in Love and War.......Sad but it is what it is.
it always denies attacking civilians but it does. Deliberately.
All is Fair in Love and War.......Sad but it is what it is.
when the US bombed Baghdad, they killed 100,000 people in 5 days. and called that collateral damage!
100K? not sure about that, but yep your point is fair.
Russia only interested in Ukraines gas and oil reserves most of which is in the annexed territories
I think you have mixed up Russia with the USA.....Russia doesn't need the oil and gas.
it unfortunate that the leaders of the world can't sit down and sort this out. what example are they to the children of the world.....for me I say they are a bad example.
I think you are detached from reality,,, Russia want to control gas and oil to starve the west, USA have plenty but not Europe. Why do you think Russia turned off the taps to Ukraine in 2014 and more recently closed the Nord Stream. How can you sit down with a murderous war criminal and sort things out??
Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
I would say that Putin would like nothing more than to drive a wedge between the US and it's allies. Clearly Russian sabotage. I mean this is what my kids do to each other.
hi
It was NOT russia who bombed the gas pipeline. Use ur common sense
common sense would dictate that the Russian authorities lie, and lie a lot. Like "we are just doing military exercises on the border of Ukraine"
Russia is stupid for invading, Russia is stupid for illegal referendum, Russia is stupid for threatening Nuclear…. Russia woukd be stupid to bomb its own pipeline…. But there you go. Its not a case of who believes Russia, its simply a case that we all believe Putin to be a bit stupid, in his hope that we wouldnt respond. Its not even about Ukraine, although i do feel for the Ukrainians being attacked by Russian Nazis, but rather, the West cant allow China to think for a second we would permit Taiwan to be taken over. Russia will never recover from this, its sad to see the great Russian people be taken in and lied to. Thats the only explanation for this madness. Ukraine will beat Russia, but Russia will try and take us all down with her. I hope someone Russian assassinates Putin asap, its the only way out for all of us.
Common sense? What would you know about that, writing tripe like that.
recent developments can cause more disturbance and pain for everyone around the globe
earlier there was a Raputin who caused the end of Tsar and Putin which would lead to the breakup of Russia
Russia invaded a peaceful country is committing mass ******and crimes against humanity. ********state.
Ter.ror.ist state
Putin/Putler will be gone in weeks if not days
Months I think but yes gone.
It seems like Putin just want this war to last at least this winter to make Europe suffer. This might be a reason russian forces halt and only defending captured regions. Perhaps if north stream 2 will get certified Putin will not have further interest in Ukraine.
That pipe will never open all the time Putin is alive.
Good. The west needed a real reason to mive to renewabkes properly and quickly, not by 2040 or 2050. By 2024 or 25 hopefully now
Good news 👏
Putin is ill and dying hence this attempt at gaining immortality. It will die with him.
Being remembered by a failed attempt of an invasion is no legacy. Loss of life such a waste and Russian forces dont even believe its the right thing and it shows. A peaceful withdrawal the best option than pushing on to what could last years of fighting.
same as Vietnam War?
Yes and what is your point ? Countries havnt learned since the 60s……
