Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Financials, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.18%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 2.11% or 0.63 points to trade at 30.44 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.94% or 0.78 points to end at 83.35 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.85% or 0.83 points to 98.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 4.08% or 2.60 points to trade at 61.07 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.03% or 2.59 points to end at 125.24 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 1.88% or 1.19 points to 62.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which rose 9.16% to 108.13, Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was up 3.45% to settle at 40.82 and Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which gained 3.08% to close at 18.77.
The worst performers were Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF) which was down 13.11% to 26.45 in late trade, Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) which lost 6.62% to settle at 64.43 and Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which was down 5.41% to 39.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Towerstream Corporation (NASDAQ:TWER) which rose 113.94% to 0.3100, Leading Brands Inc (NASDAQ:LBIX) which was up 76.92% to settle at 2.530 and EXACT Sciences Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAS) which gained 33.38% to close at 9.39.
The worst performers were Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:INFI) which was down 69.16% to 1.36 in late trade, Trio Merger Corp (NASDAQ:SAEX) which lost 52.18% to settle at 0.220 and Mesoblast Ltd (NASDAQ:MESO) which was down 40.59% to 4.2000 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2142 to 1158 and 39 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1497 fell and 1073 advanced, while 55 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.62% to 20.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.15% or 1.95 to $1288.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.96% or 0.47 to hit $48.41 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.39% or 0.70 to trade at $49.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.76% to 1.1206, while USD/JPY fell 0.09% to 106.16.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.66% at 95.04.
