Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Clean Technology and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI), which rose 5.32% or 0.32 points to trade at 6.34 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 5.14% or 0.27 points to end at 5.52 and IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) was up 3.89% or 0.190 points to 5.080 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO:KEL), which lost 5.70% or 0.280 points to trade at 4.630 in late trade. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) declined 5.59% or 0.38 points to end at 6.42 and Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) shed 5.03% or 0.170 points to 3.210.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 583 to 531 and 170 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.26% to 17.73.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.21% or 2.65 to $1269.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.60% or 0.80 to hit $49.05 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.54% or 0.78 to trade at $49.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.18% to 0.7787, while CAD/EUR fell 0.63% to 0.6895.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.34% at 93.84.
