Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.40%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 8.89% or 0.330 points to trade at 4.040 at the close. Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO:KEL) added 7.00% or 0.310 points to end at 4.740 and Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO:ESI) was up 6.48% or 0.45 points to 7.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Lucara Diamond Corp (TO:LUC), which lost 14.54% or 0.570 points to trade at 3.350 in late trade. Empire Company Ltd (TO:EMPa) declined 11.25% or 2.44 points to end at 19.25 and Intertain Group (TO:IT) shed 3.33% or 0.35 points to 10.15.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 934 to 252 and 105 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.64% to 14.80.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.22% or 2.90 to $1320.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.41% or 1.63 to hit $49.48 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 3.21% or 1.58 to trade at $50.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.55% to 0.7720, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6941.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.51% at 95.70.
