Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE), which rose 15.40% or 0.75 points to trade at 5.62 at the close. MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) added 13.27% or 0.65 points to end at 5.55 and Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) was up 10.88% or 0.52 points to 5.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TO:ZZZ), which lost 4.77% or 1.59 points to trade at 31.76 in late trade. DHX Media Ltd B (TO:DHXb) declined 3.31% or 0.24 points to end at 7.00 and New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD) shed 2.51% or 0.150 points to 5.830.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 801 to 367 and 126 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.88% to 14.17.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.34% or 4.55 to $1325.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 5.08% or 2.27 to hit $46.94 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 5.59% or 2.60 to trade at $49.12 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.82% to 0.7640, while CAD/EUR rose 0.84% to 0.6812.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.01% at 95.34.
