Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.35% to hit a new 6-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which rose 12.77% or 0.120 points to trade at 1.060 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 10.87% or 0.71 points to end at 7.24 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) was up 9.95% or 0.91 points to 10.06 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Extendicare Inc (TO:EXE), which lost 2.79% or 0.23 points to trade at 8.00 in late trade. Saputo Inc . (TO:SAP) declined 2.75% or 1.13 points to end at 39.90 and Enghouse Systems Limited (TO:ESL) shed 2.72% or 1.66 points to 59.31.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 679 to 475 and 141 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.49% to 12.28.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.41% or 5.05 to $1247.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.32% or 1.13 to hit $49.75 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.81% or 0.90 to trade at $50.54 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.91% to 0.7802, while CAD/EUR rose 0.96% to 0.6867.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.09% at 93.98.
